Agriculture contributes to the environment preservation, according to a survey

Unlike the statement from many people, agriculture has become a great ally to environment preservation. This is the highlight in a survey prepared by Embrapa Monitoramento por Satélite. Based on the data in the Rural Environmental Registry (CAR), the survey indicates that, over the past ten years, the agricultural production grew without deforestation and expansion of crop areas.

Based on CAR's information, Embrapa observed that agriculture preserves 15% of the vegetation areas in the State, versus 4.5% of the conservation units. In Mato Grosso, the biggest producer of grains in Brazil, the outcome is even more expressive, where agriculture preserves 35.9% of the native areas, whereas the index at protected areas reaches 19%.

The concept of producing more with less resources has been building a momentum among the Brazilian farmers. During the Global Agribusiness Forum 2016, event that discusses the sustainability in agriculture, experts highlighted the importance of the agricultural sector in environmental preservation.

"One of the major contributions from agribusiness to the environment was the expansion of its productivity, since over the past 20 years, we saved 60 million hectares of land, which ceased to be used to increase the production", said João Paulo Ribeiro Capobianco, Chairman of Instituto Democracia e Sustentabilidade.
